Q&A with Featured Hockey Players in Business Member: Joe Nook

Joe Nook

CEO, Nook Industries, Inc.

Where did you grow up?

Shaker Heights, Ohio

What is your hockey history?

I grew up playing center and left wing in Cleveland, Ohio, and later in New York:

  • AAA in Cleveland
  • University School (Upper School) in Cleveland
  • Northwood Prep in Lake Placid, New York
  • RIT in Rochester, New York

I also coached a Bantam team that won the Tier II National Championship.

What business are you in now?

Nook Industries, Inc. is a manufacturer of precision motion control systems headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. We design and build specialty systems for the medical, semiconductor, commercial aerospace, and automotive industries. All of our manufacturing is performed in our Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio, plant. As CEO, I drive the mission, vision, and strategic efforts as well as continuous improvement and employee engagement initiatives. Employee engagement has become increasingly important to our business, as one of our biggest challenges is attracting and retaining qualified people within a shrinking pipeline of candidates.

How has hockey helped you achieve success?

Hockey has provided me with an attitude and work ethic that I wouldn’t otherwise have today. It has taught me to work with others and to think of “we” not “me.” It also has provided me with an unwavering commitment to be the very best version of myself and to focus on giving 100% in everything that I do.

Can you share a few fun facts about yourself?

I’m still very involved in the game as an assistant coach for the Gilmour Academy Prep team, and in my “free time” I can usually be found fly fishing.
